Refining of crude oil

An oil refinery is an industrial process plant where crude oil is processed and refined into useful petroleum products. Raw oil or unprocessed ("crude") oil is not

The problem with crude oil is that it contains hundreds of different types of hydrocarbons all mixed together. You have to separate the different types of hydrocarbons to have anything useful. Fortunately there is an easy way to separate things, and this is what oil refining is all about. Close-up. The Three Stages of Refining. Crude oil needs to be processed before it can be used (See Close-Up: "Why Crude Oil Needs to be Refined").Three major types of operation are performed to refine the oil into finished products: separation, conversion and treating. An oil refinery or petroleum refinery is an industrial process plant where crude oil is transformed and refined into more useful products such as petroleum naphtha, gasoline, diesel fuel, asphalt base, heating oil, kerosene, liquefied petroleum gas, jet fuel and fuel oils. Petrochemicals feed stock like ethylene and propylene can also be produced directly by cracking crude oil without the need The crude oil has been partially refined at the production platform where most of the water, grit, gas and sand will have been removed before the oil is sent ashore via the subsea pipelines by the oil export pumps. Once received at the oil refinery the oil is desalted and heated, most of it vaporising as it is pumped into the atmospheric distillation unit for separating mixtures when refining refining oil was created in the United States, where it continues to be an important part of the nation’s economy. History Samuel M. Kier, a native of southwestern Pennsylvania, was the first person to refine crude oil. In the mid-1840s, he became aware of crude oil through his salt business. Occasionally, wells How crude oil is refined into petroleum products. Petroleum refineries change crude oil into petroleum products for use as fuels for transportation, heating, paving roads, and generating electricity and as feedstocks for making chemicals.. Refining breaks crude oil down into its various components, which are then selectively reconfigured into new products. Petroleum refining, conversion of crude oil into useful products, including fuel oils, gasoline (petrol), asphalt, and kerosene. Learn more about petroleum refining, including its history and the various processes used to create the different products.

Roughly 80-85% of all crude oil ends up as gasoline, diesel, or jet fuel. The rest is used to produce liquefied petroleum gases, petrochemical feedstocks, and a

Crude oil is unrefined liquid petroleum. Crude oil is composed of thousands of different chemical compounds called hydrocarbons, all with different boiling points. Science - combined with an infrastructure of pipelines, refineries, and transportation systems - enables crude oil to be transformed into useful and affordable products.

Not all crude oil is the same. The physical characteristics of crude oil determine how refineries process it. In simple terms, crude oils are classified by density and sulfur content. The oil refining process is the central activity of downstream oil and gas companies. In the refining process, crude oil is refined to produce different petroleum products like gasoline, diesel
