An overview of Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD) and oil sands. Video courtesy of EnCana. Steam assisted gravity drainage or SAGD is a method that is widely used to extract bitumen from underground oil sands deposits. This method involves forcing steam into sub-surface oil sands deposits to heat the bitumen locked in the sand, allowing it to flow well enough to be extracted. SAGD Oil sand is a mixture of bitumen, sand and water. Because it does not flow like conventional crude oil, it must be mined or heated underground before it can be processed. The hydrocarbon resource found in Canada’s oil sands is called bitumen. Steam-assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) was initially developed to recover bitumen from the Canadian oil sands (Dusseault et al., 1998). The key element of SAGD is that the two wells need to be parallel and horizontal. Our major owner is JAPEX with a 94% share.

The big jump in SAGD breakeven costs reflect the high price of diluent required to blend the bitumen product. Diluent (typically condensate) trades almost at par with WTI. CERI therefore concludes that no greenfield oil sands project is economically feasible under the current pricing environment.

By Andrew Nikiforuk 7  There are two primary methods of oil sands recovery. The strip-mining technique is more familiar to the general public, but can only be used for shallow bitumen deposits. However, the more recent steam-assisted gravity drainage technique (SAGD) is better suited to the much larger deep deposits that surround the shallow ones.

SAGD has several advantages over oil sands mining: Access to resources. More than 80% of Canada’s oil sands can only be accessed by drilling technologies, like SAGD. Reduced environmental footprint. With horizontal wells stretching more than a kilometre beneath the surface, a large area can be developed with minimal impact to the land. Cenovus's steam-assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) process softens deposits in the oil sands so they can be pumped to the surface. Focus is on low water use. While SAGD Oil Sands Online teaches some theory, it is focused on the operation of the various processes typical of SAGD facilities. The student is shown how a scientific theory or law of physics is applied using moving flows of gases & liquids in piping, tanks & vessels. SAGD is a continuous process, allowing for much higher production rates than CSS and improved bitumen recovery, near 60% in most cases. This technological breakthrough has enabled a major increase in bitumen production from the oil sands, with minimal land disturbance.
