Its symbol on the NYMEX is “CL.” I don’t know how it was chosen, but my guess is that it’s short for “Crude Light.” Please note that if you type that symbol into a stock quote service like Yahoo Finance or whatever, you won’t get the oil price, because CL is also the NYSE symbol for Colgate-Palmolive.
